Executing Stored Procedures in Oracle SQL Developer

Oracle SQL Developer provides a convenient way to create, edit, and execute stored procedures in Oracle database. Using SQL Developer, developers can execute procedures with or without parameters and view results returned easily.

Creating a Stored Procedure

To create a new stored procedure in SQL Developer, right click on the Procedures node under the database connection and select New Procedure. Besides returning a result set, procedures can also define output parameters to return values back. After execution, under the Parameters node, the output parameters will be populated with returned values that can be checked.

Debugging Stored Procedures

SQL Developer provides a debugger to step through procedure code, analyze variable values and identify issues. To debug, right click on the procedure and select Debug. PL/SQL code can then be executed line by line while monitoring variables and parameters.

Using Breakpoints

Breakpoints can be toggled to pause execution at specific lines. By stepping through code line by line from a breakpoint, you can understand the flow better and trace bugs.

Checking Variable Values

The debugger windows also shows all parameter and variable values at every step. This makes it easy to inspect if variables have expected values to find potential bugs.

Fixing Issues in Code

If a bug is found through debugging, the code can be fixed right in the SQL Developer editor. The procedure can then be debugged again to validate the fix.

Troubleshooting Invalid Object Errors

While executing a procedure, if PL/SQL compiler errors happen, the common causes are syntax errors or invalid object references. Some tips to troubleshoot these errors:

• Check for typos, missing semicolons etc. causing syntax errors
• Validate table, column names referenced exist
• Validate parameter data types match definition
• Check packages referenced are valid
